Instagram rate check

Rule of thumb: below 1% is low, 1–3% is ordinary, 3–6% is strong, above 6% is unusual and most common on small accounts.

Pulling your numbers from the Instagram app

  1. Followers: on the profile. Rounded figures like 3.2K are fine.
  2. Average likes: add up the likes on your last nine to twelve posts and divide by the number of posts. Skip a one-off post that travelled far beyond normal.
  3. Average comments: the same, ideally without counting your own replies.
  4. Saves and shares: only visible to the account owner, in Insights. Leave blank for other people’s profiles.

The sum behind the result

Engagement rate by followers = average interactions per post ÷ followers × 100. Picture a Leeds hair salon with 3,200 followers averaging 96 likes and 7 comments: 103 ÷ 3,200 × 100 = 3.22%. Some tools divide by reach instead, which only the owner can see, and get higher figures. Neither is wrong; just compare like with like.

Testing a follower order before you buy

Put your followers plus the pack size into the first box and keep likes and comments the same. The salon adding 1,000 followers would drop from 3.22% to 103 ÷ 4,200 × 100 = 2.45%, still in the ordinary range. Adding 10,000 would drop it to 0.78%, which looks thin. That’s exactly the proportion check we recommend on every follower pack. A modest likes pack on recent posts, or simply strong posts, keeps things balanced.

Track it monthly

Your most useful comparison is with yourself. Run the calculator on the first of each month, using the same number of posts, and compare formats too: if carousels score double what single photos do, you know what to make more of. Questions

About the Instagram calculator

Is this engagement calculator free?
Yes, completely, with no sign-up. The maths runs in your browser. Loading a profile sends only the username so we can read its public numbers (see the privacy policy).
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Roughly 1–3% is ordinary and above 3% is strong, though niche and account size shift it a lot.
Why do other calculators give a different answer?
They may divide by reach, count different interactions, or average a different number of posts. Pick one method and stick with it.
Can I check a competitor’s account?
Yes, if it’s public and shows like counts. Leave saves and shares blank.

Did the maths say top up?
